Is Tofino worth visiting with kids? Definitely YES!
If you’re thinking about taking your family to the edge of Vancouver Island, you’ve probably asked the same thing we did—is Tofino worth visiting with kids?
We’d heard amazing things about the beaches, the surf, and the laid-back vibe, but we weren’t sure how it would work with young children. Tofino is remote, the weather can change quickly, and indoor options are limited if the rain sets in. Would it be too rugged? Too quiet?
Turns out, Tofino was one of the most rewarding family trips we’ve done. From tide pools and forest trails to fish tacos and ice cream, it had everything we didn’t know we were looking for.

What Makes Tofino Great for Families

Tofino is one of those rare places that instantly makes families feel welcome. It’s a small, friendly town with a laid-back vibe that takes the pressure off. People are warm and businesses are casual.
The town is compact and easy to get around, which is great when travelling with little ones. Beaches, trails, restaurants, and shops are all within a short drive, or even a walk in some cases. You don’t need to plan out every hour of the day, because the fun is often found just by being outside.
What really stood out to us was the balance between natural beauty and low-key adventure. There’s plenty to do, but it never feels overwhelming. From tide pools and forest trails to gentle surf and wildlife tours, finding something that suits your family’s pace is easy. Add in a community that clearly values families, and it’s no surprise we ended up loving our time there.
Family-Friendly Activities in Tofino

If you’re wondering what to do in Tofino with kids, the good news is you don’t need a packed itinerary to have a great time. Most of the magic happens outdoors, and even simple activities like beachcombing or exploring tide pools can keep little ones entertained for hours.
Beaches are the heart of any Tofino visit. We spent most of our time at Cox Bay, but there are other great beaches like Chesterman, Mackenzie, and Tonquin beaches. Our kids were fascinated by the surfers, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. We took a family surf lesson with Adam from Tofino Surf Adventures and it was simply the best day ever.
The Tuff City Skate Park is a great stop for more active fun if your kids bring bikes and skates. It’s well-designed and manageable even for younger riders. We also booked a bear-watching tour with Jamie’s Whaling Station, which was absolutely amazing. We saw three black bears, sea otters, sea lions, and even bald eagles, all from the comfort of a calm, family-friendly boat. The tour was just over three hours, which was perfect.
There’s no shortage of ideas if you’re wondering what to do in Tofino as a family—but honestly, even just spending time together outside, breathing in the salty air, felt like enough.
Great Food to Eat with Kids

Tofino has no shortage of great food, and eating out with kids here is surprisingly easy. Most places have casual vibes, outdoor seating, and menus that work for both little ones and adults. We found some real favourites during our stay and are still discussing a few of the meals.
We went to Wildside Grill twice because it was just that good. Located in the Live to Surf complex, it had a relaxed setup, fast service, and amazing fish and chips. Their tacos were also a hit. Right next door, we grabbed coffees from Tofitian Café, which quickly became our morning go-to. It’s got strong coffee and a chill, beach-town atmosphere, plus space for kids to hang out while you wait.
Rhino Coffee House is another easy choice for breakfast or snacks. Their donuts are perfect for bribing kids after an early morning walk. For lunch, Tacofino’s food truck is a must-try. It can get busy, but the food is worth the wait, and the casual outdoor seating works well with kids in tow.
One of our most memorable meals was at The Bear Bierhaus. We’d heard it was a good place for oysters, and since our oldest was curious to try them, we gave it a shot. The staff were great with kids, and the atmosphere was lively but not overwhelming.
We also loved Savary Island Pie Company Tofino, especially for breakfast. Their homemade pies were incredible (definitely try the strawberry and rhubarb one if it’s available). And of course, no Tofino visit is complete without a stop at Tofino Licks. The vanilla soft serve topped with sea salt caramel and fresh pie was unforgettable. Easily the best ice cream of the trip.
If you’d rather bring your own food, there are lots of great picnic spots with views. Grab takeout and head to the beach, or pick up a few groceries for a DIY sunset dinner by the water.
Unique Places to Stay with Kids in Tofino

Tofino offers a wide range of accommodation options, and many are well-suited for families. Whether you’re looking for something beachfront, budget-friendly, or with a bit of space to spread out, you’ll find a good fit—it just helps to book early, especially during spring and summer.
We stayed at HI Tofino Hostel, which was a great choice for our family (we’ll be sharing a full review soon). It was cozy, close to the beach, and had a shared kitchen, which made meals easy and affordable. The kids loved the common areas and exploring the shore just steps from the front door.
If you’re looking for more space or a few extra comforts, there are several resorts and cottages with kitchenettes or full kitchens—ideal for families who want to prep some of their own meals. Many of these are right on or near the beach, so you can go from breakfast to sandcastle-building in minutes.
For a more outdoorsy experience, there are campgrounds and campervan sites around Tofino and nearby Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. If you’re considering a road trip, Venture Vans (based in Vancouver) offers compact, family-friendly campervans that make travelling and camping simple. We rented one for part of our trip and loved the flexibility it gave us (see our full review).
No matter where you stay, try to find a place that offers space for downtime, a kitchen or kitchenette, and easy access to the beach or town. When you’re travelling with kids, convenience and flexibility make all the difference.

Tofino Travel Tips for Parents

Travelling to Tofino with kids doesn’t have to be complicated—but a few smart tips can make the trip smoother and more enjoyable.
Pick the right time to visit.
Late spring to early fall is ideal for families. The weather is milder, activities are in full swing, and the town feels lively but not overwhelming—especially if you avoid long weekends.
Book early.
Tofino is a small town with accommodations, especially family-friendly ones, fill up fast. As soon as you know your dates, start looking.
Keep your plans flexible.
Don’t overpack the itinerary. The best moments for us were the unplanned ones—slow mornings, beach play, or a spontaneous stop for ice cream. Leave space for that kind of magic.
Know the safety basics:
- Tide charts are essential if you’re exploring beaches or trails near the water—especially with kids.
- Watch for wildlife and give animals lots of space.
- Teach basic ocean awareness—waves can be strong, even on calm-looking days.
Make meals easy.
Having low-fuss food options keeps everyone happier.
Most importantly, go with the flow. Tofino invites you to slow down, and with kids, that pace feels just right.
What to Pack for a Trip to Tofino with Kids
Tofino’s weather is famously unpredictable, so packing smart makes a big difference—especially with little ones in tow. Here’s what we recommend bringing:
- Rain gear for everyone – Waterproof jackets and pants are a must, even in summer.
- Waterproof shoes – We used Vessi shoes and they were perfect for wet trails, tide pooling, and beach days.
- Warm layers – Think hoodies, leggings, and toques for chilly mornings and evenings.
- Beach toys – Buckets, shovels, and nets go a long way on Tofino’s wide, sandy beaches.
- Books and travel games – Great for rainy afternoons or downtime in your accommodation.
- Snacks and grocery basics – Food prices in Tofino can be high, so we brought cereal, snacks, and a few easy meals.
- Swimsuits and towels – Kids will want to splash around even if the ocean’s cold.
- Sunscreen and hats – Coastal weather changes fast, and it’s easy to forget the sun when it’s breezy.
- Daypacks and reusable water bottles – Handy for hikes, beach outings, and wildlife tours.
Packing light but prepared helped us enjoy every part of the trip—rain or shine.
Final Thoughts: Why Tofino is Totally Worth It
By the end of our trip, we were completely won over. Is Tofino worth visiting with kids? Without a doubt—yes.
We came home with sandy clothes, happy (tired) kids, and a camera full of beach sunsets. Some of our favourite memories were the simplest ones: barefoot afternoons on Cox Bay, fresh pie and ice cream from Tofino Licks, and watching our kids run wild in nature without a schedule or screen in sight.
A surfing lesson with Tofino Surf Adventure was the highlight of the whole trip—our oldest still talks about it. But honestly, we didn’t need to do it all to have a great time. Tofino has this way of slowing you down and helping you reconnect—not just with nature, but with each other.
If your family loves fresh air, open space, and a bit of adventure, this little town on the edge of the island is absolutely worth the journey. We’ve already talked about going back. Honestly, we could move there.
